What A Week - Starting February 13

Welcome to Week 7 of 2012....it's just going too fast !!
On the voicing front, things have been motoring along at a fast rate of knots with eLearning jobs for people like REIQ (Real Estate Institute of Queensland), ANZIIF (Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance - not the bank who raises their home loan rates !), an opening presentation video for Akzo Nobel's Australian conference, a web video for Vic Roads "Surf Safe, Drive Safe", and dealer training for Nissan Australia.
I'm so glad that we get to do work for these companies through our many clients, and through 2012, we're expanding that list - so watch out, you might get saturated with Paul's voice everywhere you go (what's wrong with world domination ? - Paul). This week ? Rehearsals for a voice over at Melbourne's RMIT for a video installation, plus we're in discussions to produce a series of podcasts for the lovely Tracy Bartram. Watch this space.
Also, you would have heard that Whitney Houston departed this mortal coil over the weekend - which is sad for many reasons, but also that Paul grew up playing her music on the organ/keyboard in his youth and can sit down and knock out 2 of her songs by memory at the local music shop.....It just goes to prove that fame and fortune doesn't always equate to a perfect life.

2011 Wrapup

Well, the year has flown !
The one thing that I've noticed lately is that the older you get, the quicker the time marches on - do you ? (Of course, if you're in your 20's, you're lucky !). We've finished our first full year as a company with two directors, as opposed to it being a sole-trader, one man band.
It's so much easier when you've got someone to take the administrative side of things off your plate, especially when it gets busy. Jason has been an invaluable part of the business, taking care of the invoicing, client contact, phones, banking, word counts and everything else that I don't need to worry about when I'm trying to juggle 3 projects at a time (which has happened a couple of times this year !).
In 2012, Jason will be taking on the title of Business Manager and also going through training to edit projects, so that in those busy times I can continue to record Project 2 while he edits Project 1 - it's how we achieve our quick turnarounds, and we're proud of that, being a small company. We've also brought on board more male and female voices when the call is made for them - ranging from younger to older, corporate to commercial. They are not employees of ours, but simply a great resource when you're looking for a voice that I can't cover (I've tried the female thing, but it's only good if you want someone that sounds like they're fresh from a drag show !).We've also worked with many eLearning companies across Melbourne and Australia, and have in turn worked with many end clients that include Fair Work Australia, Telstra, Westpac, CareSuper and many more. It's simple - we are specialists in eLearning narration, and will be powering into 2012 doing that on an even bigger scale. We find the bulk of the work is for projects that are for illiterate users, and in that way we think we're doing something good for the world !For 2012, we're looking to move from Melbourne's south east suburbs to a location a lot closer to the city - 95% of our Melbourne clients are there, and it's nice to not travel so much. We're also looking into possibly having a separate office in the area as well, so we'll keep you posted on that too.Apart from that, we appreciate the work we've done with the clients we have, and look forward to more of the same and to welcome on board new partnerships in the next 12 months to become the 'go-to' company for voice overs and audio production.Enjoy the break, take care of yourself and your loved ones .... and we'll talk to you in the second year of the second decade of the 21st century !

Recharging The Batteries

It's rare that the Big Mouth Media machine gets a chance to stop and revive it's batteries - but we were lucky enough to do it recently...
A long time friend of ours, Andrew Fildes invited us to get away from it all and go on a break, and you don't say no when there's a holiday involved !
On Friday morning, it was tools down and a quick run to Tullamarine Airport. Hop on an early flight and we're in Sydney an hour later.
Follow that by a short flight (full of schoolies !) to Ballina, 20km's outside of Byron Bay.
This was our starting point to head towards Gaia Retreat And Spa in the town of Brooklet, a 15 minute drive inland. After a few winding roads (and a couple of close calls with locals who know the roads better than we do), we arrived at a place that can only be described as QUIET !!!!! It's a 25 acre property that is owned by several different people, one of those being Olivia Newton John.

It's nice to have a break from the usual hub-bub of life and the rules were 'no mobile phones' (although I bought the iPad usually reserved for reading scripts to watch some Futurama !), and there wasn't even a TV.
So, a lot of the time was spent eating some beautiful food which has caused some minor weight loss (that's the hope anyway...), a spectacular hillside retreat and there was even half a day spent getting massages and personal grooming things done - I think I've woken up some muscles that haven't been spoken to for a few years !!
There was also trips to Bangalow, Lennox Head, Ballina and Byron Bay, which was over run with schoolies.
We met some great people along the way, including the managing director Gregg Cave who was always happy to have a chat - and who knows, soon you could be hearing my voice on some Gaia branded marketing !

A Sense Of Trepidation !

For a number of years, we've both been fans and champions of community TV, especially Channel 31 in Melbourne.
Going back a while, a girl by the name of Josie Parelli hosted a show called "Chartbusting 80's", which was a huge collection of hits and misses from the decade a lot of us would rather forget !!!So, since leaving TV, Josie has moved into the directing/acting arena, having already worked on "Ricky! The Movie" and a large number of plays both here in Melbourne and overseas in places like New York.
Now, she's made her own short film "Trepidation", for which she had the world premiere a few weeks ago at a really interesting space called Revolt Productions, located in Kensington (inner Melbourne). It's a combination of theatres/cinemas/band performances spaces, and has a really great feel to it - almost like an underground nightclub, all housed in an innocent looking warehouse in a side street.
So, we ventured into watch the movie (it's good !), and met up with Josie and also Sean McIntyre from Wise Words Media - he is in the marketing communications business and does a lot of good work in the plain english field of marketing - so chase him up if you have anything he can provide for you !

Steve Jobs - RIP

On October 5th, 2011, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs passed away at his home in California.
It was interesting to note that on his death certificate his occupation was listed as "entrepreneur" in the "high tech" business.
For the last 8 years, I've been a fan of his inventions/machines/life changers - so much so that I went from being a PC guy to a complete Mac guy - and Big Mouth Media runs solely on Mac computers - everything from the iPhones to speak to our clients, to the iPad to read the scripts and the iMacs to edit the voice overs and send emails.
It's ironic and sad that he passed away a day after the new iPhone 4s got released (probably getting that one too !), but I'm sure he was glad to have seen so many life-changing gadgets/toys/useful business tools come to fruition. He was a very creative and forward-thinking person who changed not only the face of technology, but also the company he was CEO of twice in his life, Apple Inc. - a lot of people had a lot of respect for his business manner and nous, which is something that we all should have in some form or another in our lives.

Steve Jobs - gone at 56, but will live on for years to come.

Going Back To Paul's Radio Days with Tony Martin

Back in the day, Paul worked on radio stations across the country in various guises (the most used one being "PJ" the DJ....he still gets called that to this day by those close to him !).
He interviewed many celebrities, amongst them Nancy Cartwright (Bart Simpson), Harry Shearer (The Simpsons) - hmm, seems like a bit of a pattern going on here :)
Recently, we went through the archives and found an old interview from 2003 with comedian Tony Martin, of Martin-Molloy / Late Show / D-Generation, and now "Joy Of Sets" fame.
It's quite an interesting listen, so click on the play button below and pass some time at work !

Back In Radio Again !

You've probably looked at the headline and thought - "but he's doing voice overs now !"....well, I still am, but I've also started doing what got me into this business in the first place - radio.

We are in a business allegiance with Jamie Cammell, who runs a business that focuses on instore radio as well as Corporate/Trade Expo radio, and last weekend I was the main announcer for the Master Builders Building & Home Improvement Expo.
It was held at the Melbourne Exhibtion Centre ("Jeff's Shed" to us here in Melbourne - our premier Jeff Kennett got it built !) and was open to the public to find out about renovating or building new homes, and covered a massive area of the centre.
My task was to keep the music moving along and picking the appropriate tracks for the right time of the day (which is handy as I was the Assistant Music Director at Star FM for 2 years !) and announcing upcoming presentations, lost children and more :). It was never designed to be the 'hero' of the exhibition, but more a layer of atmosphere, and it was great.
It was a different kettle of fish to being in the studio and is something I'll be doing more of over the coming months as more exhibitions come to Melbourne and other parts of Australia.

Things Are Getting Busy

Sheesh......
When things get busy, they really get busy ! So much so, I haven't had time to update the blog for a while.
But right now it's Saturday night and after a marathon of "Shameless" (it's a very wrong UK series !), I thought I'd touch base, so to speak.
So, in the last 2 weeks, after a slight hiccup of the cold & flu that's going around, we've started working on a HUGE 96 module eLearning project with The Cyber Institute out of Brisbane. We've done 10 modules so far - the client (a multi-national) is happy, and we're off and running. We pride ourselves on offering the WHOLE service, and that's what we're doing with TCI (and everybody else !).....the voice is recorded, the audio is edited along with EQ and compression, and then it's delivered in the right format to the client.
We're finding that Dropbox is one of the best collaboration tools - all the audio goes to the folder, where it gets picked up by the client once it's synchronised (which isn't a long time). Then we communicate via Skype to establish any changes or fixes. At the moment, Skype is with chat but it can also be video and/or audio - so it's a great tool whatever the case, especially when you have to conference 3-4 people at a time. One thing that the program is also capable of is being able to take the audio feed from our audio throughput and feed it to Skype, which means that everything can be listened to at the time it's recorded - very handy. The side of it hasn't been used yet as a lot of clients tend to trust my experience !
I've finished off both voicing and editing for final delivery an iPhone game for Impact Game Audio. It has around 8 different characters, of which I'm two ! It was a lot of fun for all of us involved (which are the Big Mouth Voices - Dani, John and Louise), and as soon as it goes to publication, I'll get some demos and an iTunes link.
What else ? Let's see....a number of ads for regional radio and TV (including a Michael Caine takeoff !), and an ad with Nova 100 Melbourne for Audi Brighton - wish I could get paid in cars not dollars :) - all from the home studio !
Also, it's tax time - so Jason's been labouriously going through and updating the accounts, as I'm sure you have - it's not the funnest job in the world, is it ?
If you've just found us via this blog or a trusty Google search and think we can be a useful tool for your business, don't hesitate to give us a ring and we can chat more about it !
Talk soon.

My Life As An Extra - Pt.2 - The Shoot

So, I've been an extra for a day now - and it was an interesting experience !
The day ended up being not as cold as I first thought, but I'm still glad that I wore my thermals underneath (nobody saw em, it was all covered up by my tradie's uniform) because we ended up with a 7am start.I left home at 5:30am (still dark), and the best thing about travelling into the city before the peak hour is you can avoid the crap stop/start that usually kicks in about 7am. I was so far ahead of myself that I got in with about 45 minutes to spare !

On arriving at the location in central Melbourne, we were told 'breakfast first', so I tucked into a croissant and a bacon & egg sandwich with a glass of orange juice and watched the passing parade of workers heading off to their offices.
We ended up starting at 8am, and initially my scenes were inside the cafe but then ended up being a 'passerby' watching the main actor get angry over his car (he did it well !). This continued on for a while, then I ended up driving 2 different cars past the scene - that was pretty easy, just had to look shocked when he starting kicking in the headlights :)
We broke for lunch, then continued on with various shots, ending up with a big finale - you'll have to wait to see it !
The product and commercial will be launched soon, and I'll post up my "behind the scenes" video and the final ad when it's all ready to go.

My Life As An Extra - Pt.1 : Getting Ready

It's a unique experience, but Paul is getting kitted up as a tradie for a TV commercial shoot - nothing like getting outside the box is there ?
I'm working with Snapper Productions on Tuesday in the Melbourne CBD to work on a TVC (TV Commercial if you're not in the biz !), and have been cast as "Tradesman 1".
To be honest, it's been about 6-7 years since I last worked as an extra, and it can be quite a long day for those not directly involved in the shoot. But no complaints, we get fed and watered and paid at the end of the day, and that's not a bad thing.
The only issue I've had is that I have never worked as a tradesman in my life - heck, I hate getting up in the roofspace to check things, too scared I'll fall through the roof !.
Thanks to my good friends at Deakin University Burwood's TV Studio, I've been able to transform myself into a bit of a roughnut (assuming that's what they want - what is my character's backstory ???), plus a few days facial stubble and I'm ready to go.
It'll be an outdoor shoot, so I'm going to take my thermals (nobody will see them), a few extra jackets, and it should be OK - 17 degrees and cloudy is the forecast for the day.
Paul.

You know how sometimes in life you crave for something ?
Sometimes it's chocolate, your footy team to finally win, a guy or girl......well for us, it's - heating !
It's been about 6 months since having to turn the central heating on, and unfortunately we discovered the (near new) heating system has locked up on us ! That's the last thing you need when the days are chilly and the nights are freezing. For some reason or another, Melbourne's autumn feels like mid winter, similar to the way summer felt like autumn - I reckon it's something to do with the global warming phenomenon, and being so southerly in Australia (with the exception of Tassie !), we feel the brunt of the weather all too often. In saying that, I'm Melbourne born and bred, and wouldn't give up my hometown for anything !Mind you, my sister lives north of Brisbane, and many of Big Mouth's clients reside north of us, so there's always a good reason to make a visit !
Anyway, problem solved by purchasing a couple of homebrand heaters from Big W tonight, which will (a) increase the electricity bill a bit, (b) make life a bit more bearable while recording !

Big Mouth Media Goes Green

Last week, Big Mouth Media acquired it's zillionth Apple product....this time, the new iPad 2 !
There was some resistance in getting the first one, and even now there are rumours floating around that there's a 3rd one in the works later this year - technology never seems to give up when it comes to superceding itself.
The reason it's now in the collection - apart from being a new plaything, and great way to watch movies on a plane - is to be able to be environmentally friendly.
After seeing how much paper we go through each week printing scripts and memos, it was time to move to the electronic version - as one of our clients says: "Go Green - Read From The Screen !".
Often, a lot of the eLearning projects we do run up to 20-30 pages (one was 60 !), and the amount of (a) paper and (b) printer ink we go through is just phenomenal, not to mention costly.
So as of Wednesday April 13th, 2011 - we're going green and - reading from the screen.
Now, we're a bit more carbon neutral (and Julia, you can't tax me !)

StartUp Smart Awards 2011

We attended the StartUp Smart Awards at Crown Metropol in Melbourne on Wednesday night. They're designed to award smaller businesses who are doing well in their chosen field - from Melbourne and across Australia.
Not winning wasn't important - meeting new business colleagues and potential business partners was !
We travelled to the Crown Metropol Hotel in Melbourne's CBD (very swish !), and then up 28 floors to the appropriately named "28" - it's a part bar, part function room, part relaxing space with a VERY nice view across Melbourne (I took a photo, but wasn't done justice...).
We got there a bit before it started @ 5pm, and spent about an hour speaking to various people who came up and asked what Big Mouth Media was (I knew it was a good idea coming up with a catchy name). In the end, we spoke to Jason Swaffield (Spruiks For Deals), Wai Hong Fong (Oz Hut - they sell a lot of lifestyle goods online, and he was a winner of one of the awards too !), David Llewellyn, National Marketing Manager (Officeworks), Bob Ilievski (Wireless Synergy), Brendan Beattie (Single Serve Packaging - wine in a prepacked glass, bloody good idea !).
Then, someone who is a bit of an idol for us (and maybe you if you grew up in the 80's) - Dr Colin Benjamin from Life Be In It. He surprised us by opening his mouth, and out came the voice of "Norm" - the icon of Life Be In It for 20 years. Dare we say it was a little less kid-friendly ? :)
We also met with the founder of StartupSmart, Amanda Gome (below) - she was pretty busy, but nice to catch up with.

Finally, Danielle Karalus & John Cherry, who were videographers for the night, and could be potential collaborators on future projects !
It was a great night of finger food, fast chats and a nice view - and who knows, next year we could be in the top 10 !

Well folks, a recent car accident has caused the Big Mouth Media mobile to have more dints than it usually has (ie none !).

I was just innocently waiting to turn into a street in Noble Park (Victoria), and the other driver mustn'tve been concentrating. I looked in the rear vision mirror, as you're wanton to do, saw her coming - looked again a second later and she's still heading towards me !
Luckily I shifted out of the way of the car in front of me to take the brunt of the impact, but it still left the car worse for wear. Ironically, the bumper had only been repaired 2 weeks previous to that - such is life.

It's rare that we have a chance to get away from the studio and office, but this past weekend was the ideal chance to do it !
The "Tastes Of Rutherglen" weekend is an annual celebration of the wineries and foodmakers around the north east of Victoria. About 15-20 different wineries match up with local restaurants to provide a glass of their wine and a plate of beautiful food.
When I was living up in Albury in the early part of last decade, we went a couple of times, but we hadn't been since 2006, so it was nice to head up the Hume again.
We ended up at Pfieffers Winery in Rutherglen, on a beautiful Sunday over (funnily enough) Sunday Creek.....they have a bridge at their property that was setup, and nobody else was there.
Also managed to catch up with some former workmates at Star FM / The River in Albury at the same time. It's nice to soak up the peace and quiet of the country, and looking forward to getting up there again in 2012 !

Asian Animation company NMA TV have been producing videos like the one above for years, and even though it might not seem like top-shelf quality, they're VERY funny ! Here's their take on Ricky Gervais' hosting of the Golden Globes :)

Man With The Golden Voice

This story has been circulating a fair bit around the world (including Australia), and I had to post it myself as it's close to my heart - someone who does voice overs !
But not only that, he was previously living under a freeway overpass in Ohio, USA after spiralling into drugs and alcohol. He used to be a radio jock in the early days, but lately he's been seen as just another 'homeless bum', which many people would yell to him "get a job".
It took a video journalist to film him begging for money/food and opening up his mouth to speak - and coming out with the deepest, richest voice you've ever heard. He's now been given offers to commentate US football, voice ads and even to star next to Jack Nicholson in his next movie.
Here's the story that helped discover Ted Williams.

On Friday December 31, we both set off to the Melbourne CBD to see the city fireworks - never been to them before, funnily enough !I think the numbers might've been down a bit, because we managed to get a clear patch of grass near Birrarung Marr on the Yarra, with a great vantage point to call in 2011.Here's the video:

So as we start 2011, we hope to speak to you soon and do some business together - it's going to be an even bigger and better year for Big Mouth Media !

Recently, Paul visited some of Big Mouth Media's clients to present a Christmas Hamper built by us ! It included wine, nibblies, crackers, and a box of Favourites (which seemed to mysteriously disappear quicker than you can say - "chocolate").
Shown above are Johnny and Ben from FinPA New Media with a handful of hamper !
This year a lot of Christmas cards went out, and there'll be more hampers next year.

Christmas Party Drinks

Earlier this month, I joined in around 100 of my fellow voice artists at The Water Rat Hotel in South Melbourne for Christmas drinks.

It was all in aid of officially celebrating Christmas and the successful launch of the Talent Please iPhone App.
If you've not heard of it before, it's basically a way to cast either agency or freelance voice talents (like myself) without having to go to the internet and trudge through 30 different lists/sites.All the voices that a part of the app have their photos, info and demo listed on it, and it's easy if you're a producer/engineer/creative director to find who you want with a lot of different search parameters.
If you'd like to know more, head to: TALENT PLEASE

Getting Ready For Christmas

Ah, it's here again ! It seems like the whole of December becomes Christmas these days (earlier in the shops !), and so we thought we'd get amongst it by putting up a tree :)
We went to Christmas Kingdom in Abbotsford, and luckily they had lots of goodies AND a sale on at the same time.

We bought a whole heap of trinkets, lights and a nice (if not totally real) tree that we can keep for future years.

This is not only a tradition, but it's also the first time we've had a Xmas tree at our new house/studio :) Now, for some presents........*hint, hint*
